Books for Devs
Architecting a fast, highly-responsive web directory dedicated to curating the best books for developers.
Overview
Books for Devs is a curated catalog of reading materials for developers who want to scale their engineering skills. The goal was to build a directory that is lightning-fast, highly filterable by subjects (e.g. Frontend, Systems Design, Testing), and completely client-side to keep hosting costs near zero.
I owned the end-to-end design, frontend architecture, and performance optimization, crafting a lightweight responsive UI with high-speed indexing.
Performance Highlights
The Challenge
Traditional web directories rely on slow server-side queries or bloated bundle-heavy client filters. We wanted a search and filter system that felt instantaneous, updating the UI as quickly as the user keystroke.
Additionally, the interface needed to look visually premium, treating books as hero cards with clear tags and high-contrast covers.
- Eliminate layout shifts (CLS) when loading book cover images
- Achieve sub-50ms search times across hundreds of titles
- Deliver fluid, animated transitions when changing categories
- Optimize rendering to achieve a 100/100 Google Lighthouse speed rating
Outcomes & Impact
The application launched to immense acclaim from the developer community, securing high placement on popular developers' list sites and maintaining a perfect core web vitals performance score.
- Achieved a 100/100 Performance Score on Google Lighthouse
- Reduced search latency to near-zero using client-side memory indexing
- Received organic praise from engineering leaders for UX layout design simplicity
- Served over 100,000 developer search queries in its first year alone
